Attribute "Max Health" only updates after taking damage.
I'm not currently sure what is happening, but if I use the "attribute" command to lower a player's maximum health any amount, it will not register until I take damage, in which afterwards it will go down to the suggested health. I can take any amount of damage I want, up to the originally set base, otherwise I die.
Are there any fixes to this problem? If not, are there any good workarounds? Thank you!

Maybe try this instead: /effect give @s minecraft:health_boost 999999 5 true
This is also a bug report which has been reported to mojang: bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-180001
