Optifine says I need to play 1.12, but I already have.dddddd

I want to install Optifine, but when I try it says I need to play 1.12 first, but I've already played 1.12 multiple times. I think this may be because Minecraft isn't saving anything into the versions folder, which is where Optifine looks for 1.12, but I have no idea how to fix this. Any help?

You have to play 1.12 using the original launcher, which will create a folder in
.minecraft/versions
.minecraft/versions
