Do not use Paint. That doesnt support transparency so it fills every transparent part with white or black. Only way to go is get Paint.NET, Gimp or Adobe Fireworks.
I suggest you use Adobe Fireworks. It's the best and Paint.net thing sucks anal. LOL
Try replacing the white border with a darker shade of whatever color the block is.

if you are doing a 16x16 its 16.5 and if your doing a 32x32 its 32.5 ect
