ViaBackwards, ViaRewind, and ViaVersion exist for this reason - but why would you want 1.4.x anyway?
For which of those plugins you want, check https://jo0001.github.io/ViaSetup/

In many cases you should use the latest subversion of a version - so, 1.4.7 - which ProtocolSupport plugin is capable of supporting. However, many features will be unavailable.

yea, and crash is often if there are too many entities

I don't think it makes much sense to join a modern survival server on 1.4.7, though.

just for fun.

I don't think so. It is not supported on big servers like Hypixel, try using 1.8. That should widen the range of servers you can use.

No one supports the version 1.4.6 anymore. If anything, versions 1.7 and 1.8 are the oldest version to be supported, and they can join a server with the latest version if the server has the ViaRewind plugin.

I don't think so, and if it would be possible somehow you would lose so many content from the next updates.
I still remember that the older minecraft version was 1.5.2, that was a great age for minecraft.

Of course not, 1.4.6 doesn’t have the features of Caves and Cliffs. The server would need to run 1.4.6 and allow clients of versions past 1.4.6 to join. You wouldn’t have all the features of 1.18.2.

Your answer is somewhat correct.
The client doesn't need to have the latest features present in a newer server version.
For instance, I've joined a 1.14.4 server through a 1.12.2 client, and obviously, you cannot swim, as swimming is added in 1.13.
Same goes for other blocks that will be substituted to be supported on older versions, like bamboo being sugarcane on <1.13.

um I mean can a 1.4.6 client join a 1.18.2 spigot server

The answer is still no. There's plugins like viarewind and ProtocolSupport, but the experience will likely be buggy and they don't got back that far. ProtocolSupport goes back to 1.4.7.
If you want to remember old versions, it would be better to play on a server made for those versions rather than trying to force a connection to a newer version. Though I'm not sure many exist.

Protocol Support. This is the right answer.
But don't forgot 1.4.6 have the same protocol as 1.4.7, so it is possible.

They cannot.
That doesn't mean you can't play on older versions and they have to be forgotten though. You can install separate instances on many Minecraft launchers, so you can have one to play on older versions, and another to play on newer versions.
