I personally like the personality's of the pandas. It gives them emotion and expression. All though they could use some worked on, like there bold white eyes. I am a maybe, how about you.

They don't really do anything beneficial for us players, but I do like the concept of personalities.

All the Pandas I find are studpid because they do dumb things like wander into lava... :/

Barring the ability to serve as a [very low efficiency slime ball source], pandas appear to be another 5-minute mob [ie like the parrot and polar bear, they are interestiing fror about five minutes].
Collectors (particularly completists) will find the varieties interesting in the same sense the 11[?] different [but functionally identical] cat skins are interesting.
The breeding minigame (like the previous examples with equines and llamas) may be of some interest, again mainly to completists as the mobs have little to no utility.
Pandas do a fair job of pegging the Kute-O-Meter, but devoting the developement resources they represent to regaining performance, fixing the bugs that annoy players, or reworking the worst extant mobs [Drowned & MobB] would each have provided considerably greater returns on the investment….

I think they just did it to appeal to the little kids who play it. They see pandas and instantly and endless beg mom or dad to buy the game because its "just that cute".

I don't think the effect is specifically tied to age ("little kids") [I was given my first Mechano set @ ~3 yo]…
… although one would hope the relevant sort of behavior was something out of which people grew..
It seems more about trying to cater to a different sort of user:
-- MC started as a 'thing' where one was given some basic blocks and built >cool stuff<; a paradigm which requires creativity a a fair bit of time & effort on the part of the end user, but which provides literally infinite possibilities of what to do.
-- Recent additions [many of them] seem more to play to the sort of user who wants to find >cool stuff< (rather than create his own). [Note also the move to extrinsic rewards: ruins are (very nearly) desert wells with loot chests.]

Sure they're fun to see, but they're as useless as bats. Perhaps even more useless... I wonder how it happened that they choose pandas. It's not that they're in short supply of good ideas, but still they manage to pick the worst idea.

I feel the pandas do add more to the jungle which is very nice. I also love how the game is adding more things to explore and work with
