So there's this thing, it's called system 32... Just kidding. Yes, my friend OptiFine is quite safe. Once you do install it head over to the graphics option in-game and you'll see a tab called "Shaders". Pick a shader you like and drop it into the shader folder. Done.

once you have the optifine version you want, right click the file and run with Java (obv if you don’t have a Java you’ll need to download it, it’s free and safe).
Go through the install messages, then open the launcher the choose the version that has a glass icon and says Optifine 1.xx (whatever version you chose)

Yes, it's the main site people go to in order to get the mod. Just don't click on any of the downloads that (Ad link removed) offers.
