like what gamemode do you start with how will people dont get bored etc

You must have a unique concept in order to have a successful server in the long term.
Time and time again, I've seen ambitious soon-to-be server owners spend hours setting up a factions or skyblock server, then be let down when it never picks up. Think about it for a second, there are hundreds of servers out there that run gamemodes like factions, skyblock, vanilla, etc., you need to have something that makes your server unique so that players choose you over the competition.
Another important aspect of owning a successful server is ensuring adequate funding. Operating and advertisement expenses can pile up rather quickly if your server gains traction, just be prepared to spend a bit of cash to get things going and maintain a steady flow of new players.
Overall, though, just make sure you can differentiate yourself from the competition.
