Map edges?

ever since i started testing weekly snapshots(now i use 1.3.1) theres been a map edge. you cannot place any blocks beyond the edge it is possible to go past it by flying though you can put torches though but they dont produce light.it acts like you took mcedit and deleted a chunk instead of replacing it with air kinda. below the map edges it the void. there is no bedrock and you can see through caves and dungeons using flying now it is 1.3 and when i make a new map it spawned me near a map edge. when i go to make another map i went looking for strongholds and i discovered another map edge. please help

I have a problem where it says the server disconnected me because of an internal error in single player. Everytime I load the world, 5 secs later it disconnects me. Now I like the idea of singleplayer being made into lan servers but, if it crashes me every 5 seconds, it gets pretty annoying.

also in smp ive been seeing true "invisible" chunks that you can actualy walk on alot more ever since the 1.3 update

This could be due to the merge of SP and MP because the former now runs on a local server.

no its not that. lava and water in underground lakes stand still. its not an unrendered chunk because my computer renders very fast and i cannot walk on it

This is not the FarLands!
Your Minecraft simply cannot render the world properly (cause your computer isn't strong enough or your render distance is too high or ... ya). Minecraft is still loading the blocks, but you can't see them. They are just invisible.
Since players might get this issue in Multiplayer, reconnecting always works. The same might work for singleplayer!

plus it would take 34 days(nonstop) to get there. both maps are newly generated

plus this looks nothing like the farlands because the farlands are beyond x/y ±12,550,821 and you spawn within a few hundrend meters of 0,64,0

Farlands were accidently removed in beta 1.8
But they (accidently) added a new one at x/z 30.000.000
