Minecraft Name Changes ... Will it Stuff up server bans?
I have seen this asked everywhere lately since the announcement of 'code placed in in preparation for username changes'
Looking through console on my server when i noticed a user trying to connect that was banned... it came up like this (###### = Username + IP hidden but shows in console )
What i take it from this the GameProfile is a unique code assigned to EACH user in minecraft. The name= " ##### " section shows the actual username they tried to login with... From my understanding and hoping is that if we can change usernames Paid or Not Paid the only thing that would change is the name= ' ## ' section meaning all previous bans on a server under a specific username would still stand.
I hope I am correct in this assumption if anyone has more info they would like to add please do.

I'm kinda worried about name changing.Like if you team with a total jerk in pvp,and he changes his name,he might team with you again. So as long as you can't change your name ALOT it should be good.

It bans the User ID or game profile whatever it's called and not the username

ip ban them

Even if players were to change their name, couldn't you just IP ban them? Considering most griefers are immature kids which I doubt understand how bypass an IP ban?

Unless they are smart enough to spoof their IP.

Before 1.7.2 was released, they made 1.6.4 to solve any problems for servers keeping their maps. It is very likely that this decision means they are smart enough to create some fix to the ban system before transitioning to UUID from just player name.

Also, because of the way UUIDs work, you can even use tools to get the correct case of a username. Might be pretty cool, especially for use in a couple of my plugins.
Oh
That will be nice.

Actually, they're not called "hashes", they're called UUIDS-- unique user IDs. Each Minecraft account is assigned one, and the ban system will likely adapt to implement this. When you ban someone by name, it will probably just ban their UUID instead of their actual "username".
You can find the UUID of your or someone else's account at the following: http://mcuser.clankstar.com/

IP bans should still work and the hash ban system as mentioned above. ^-^

its called a hash, each person has one assigned to their account, when i ban your ass it bans your hash not your username. many games use this to keep track of players, its usually easy to get a new hash though or trick the games into not caring about it.

Indeed, I was glad to see it actually come up in console since not many people were sure about what would happen with name changes and this confirmed the changes they did make would not let players bypass bans

it remains to be seen how easy it will be to get around the hash, in cod4 u used to be able to change your hash at wlll by typing in a new gamekey. banning by ip adress will remain the most sure way to get rid of someone, unless of course they have a dynamic ip like some do

The hash, or UUID, will be linked to your account on Mojang's database. The only way to change it would be to hack Mojang's database, which is hosted by Amazon
