Need help building a mob system!

So I play on a SkyBlock server and I need to make a place where mobs can actually spawn. I will manually kill them as they spawn. What should I know (Where to place it, distance from HQ, etc.)?

Just make a large area of cobble, 24 blocks away from you to spawn mobs.

Make it dark. And yes they spawn on cobble.
