So I found out that you cannot stop an oak sapling from growing into the big trees by placing a block above it like in 1.15. Was this an intended update by Mojang or an accidental change? I have not been able to find anything on it on like the Minecraft wiki or other sites that display all updates for the 1.16 nether update. I use Ilmango's tnt tree farm and it works with all the other trees but oak trees aren't stopped from the double piston extender on top.

i'm pretty sure it has something to do with a bug with the new nether trees that were added. there was a bug that the trees would go through blocks that they shouldn't be able to go through. they might've messed up some code, or some code must have messed up the oak tree generation. it's the only thing that i could think of that could cause this error. i could definitely be wrong though.
