The 1.7.6 update was just released, about an hour ago!
What is this update?
This is an update mostly for developers, to work on transitioning to the new UUID system. It barely affects players.
What does it add?
The new skin servers, and preparation for name changes!
What doesn't it add?
Name changes.
How does this affect me?
Unless you are a plugin developer/ server admin, it will not affect you too greatly. Please be aware that servers will have to update to 1.7.6, which could take a while. Until then, please continue using 1.7.2-1.7.5 to play on servers.

I've gotten a lot of questions about name changes. Here are the facts as they stand: NAME CHANGES WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL AFTER 1.8 IS RELEASED. You will be able change your name at any time, for free. There will be a limit to how many changes an account can have. Your account must be migrated (if you log in with a username, and not email, your account is not migrated). If you change your name, you will still have the bans/whitelists/donation perks of your last name, due to the new UUID system. If that's all too confusing, please PM me, I'll give you a chart which'll make it easier to understand. Plugins will begin updating to the UUID system asap, as will Bukkit and Spigot, so hopefully servers will be ready to go soon! 1.7.6 also adds the ability to /op players on your Realms server. That's about it, if I left anything out, feel free to add a comment.

*This post is geared toward casual players, not developers or admins.

After some thinking it must be preparing for 1.8 like you said. Mojang wouldn't post an update minecraft and tell us what they did.

I've already got my skin in the 1.8 format. I added a Pip-boy 300 from Fallout.

Mojang has never hinted towards a 1.9, or 1.10 update. They have only given statements about the 1.7 and 1.8 updates.

Let me be more clear. It changed the skin servers, which added support for the new format.

The wiki is slow to get new information. Instead of a new log i was greeted with this:

"Recently Security Issues

There has recently been a security incident that affected Minecraft (and two thirds of the internet). It is strongly advised that you change your Minecraft/Mojang password. Please see here for more information."

The wiki is very slow. Very.

As for not believing me, I take all my information straight from the sources. In this case, Mojang.com, and Tweets by Dinnerbone, and the rest of the Mojang staff. Whether or not you believe me is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is, these are the facts, as stated by Mojang.

In the launcher, go to Edit Profile > Use Version > and select 1.7.6, or "Use Latest Version."

1.8 will be a personalization update and will add a few blocks like polished granite.

It shouldn't be acting up, unless you are trying to connect with a 1.7.6 client. In that case, switch to a 1.7.2-1.7.5 client. On the launcher, go to Edit Profile, click "Use Version," and select an older version. Release 1.7.5 works.

If you are running a vanilla server, and updated it to 1.7.6, please report any bugs to Mojang

Or if you use Spigot you can just update to the latest build that allows 1.7.2-1.7.6 clients to join. There are some bugs like 1.7.6 clients do not see the skins on player heads, But it does work other then that.

Spigot 1.7.6 is supported only by Spigot, and is a protocol hack. It isn't actually 1.7.6, it only allows the clients to connect. If you find a bug with it, please report it to Spigot.

That being said, it's what I'm currently running on my test server, and have had no issues with it.

I was not reporting that. I was just pointing out for anyone that is wanting both 1.7.5 and 1.7.6 clients to be able to join their server that Spigot is an option. That and Spigot cant fix the skin bug b/c 1.7.2 - 1.7.5 and 1.7.6 load skins differently, from what I have seen.

Yeah, yeah! I wasn't saying you were reporting it, I was giving a link to the people who use Spigot, and have errors to report with it. Sorry for the confusion, and thanks for the post, it'll help some people with server connections.

I personally think that it is being worked on, as I've been watching the bug tracker. From what has been posted, I have come to believe that the skin servers WERE changed, meaning 1.7.6 draws from the new servers, yet the format hasn't been changed. It may be fixed, it may not be. Looking at the official Mojang post, they never say that the format will be implemented in the 1.7.6 update, they only talked about the servers changing for skins. Again, that is my assumption, I could be 100% wrong about all that.

Im just going off of https://twitter.com/jeb_/status/453459164086685696 But with Mojang its hard to tell. xD
[Edit] But... now that I think about it... He might be talking about how skins are sent to the client?

Did some more research, here is what I found:

  • Skins and capes are now distributed through servers.
  • Skins server outages will occur less frequently and have less impact.
  • Skin changes will no longer require client restarting, at worst re-logging will update the skin for everybody.
  • Server-altered skins/capes are not possible - only signed URLs are stored server-side
  • Duplicate skins no longer need to be downloaded twice.

So it appears that only the servers were changed, the new format may not occur until 1.8 after all.
