Skeleton Vanishing?

I'm working on something, then I see a skeleton and a creeper, then the skeleton just disappears, I walk over there and I see no drops or xp orbs, then I check to see if he walked out of range, I did not find him. So what exactly happened?

This can happen. Mobs can disappear eventually if nothing is done with them for too long. I was trying to get the Sniper duel achievement and the skeleton I spawned disappeared because I kept missing him. (Range of 50 meters is needed to get the achievement)
