Thoughts on Alex, the new default skin of Minecraft?

Earlier today, the Minecraft 1.8 pre-release was released. In all of the new (180+) features, the newest (And most likely the last) one was a new default skin. Here it is:
Yes, it is a female skin, named Alex. Why? Well, a majority of the Minecraft players are male, so naturally many players will be outraged by this. The obvious reason they did this was to appeal to female gamers. Maybe they want the game to have a balanced gender population? I feel that even though all of the manly (But most of the time noobish) Steve's will be replaced with a woman, this could still have potential. Also, Alex isn't a new face in Minecraft. She can be seen in official Minecraft advertisements, like the one here:

UPDATE: According to multiple comments, there will be a 50/50 distribution of Alex and Steve skins for skinless players, making it fair.

I think it would be a good start for new default skins.
I think there should be a female and male default skin, which you choose when you first open the game.

I reckon the same as Butterblender. Probably in profile edit there should be a girl and a boy choice
I agree with Butterblender and all the others who said there should be a gender choice. I can see where the girls wouldn't like having a male skin as default and i also see where the boys are even more against having a girl skin as default. Having a gender choice in the profile settings on minecraft.net would be a way to settle this and would even allow for selling accounts to the opposite gender.

I've been waiting for this to actually happen, too, a female default skin. Also would make me feel less "noob-ish" when my skin is glitching and I'm Steve (or Alex I guess)

no....... just no you cannot get rid of steve, many noobs are steve but still, you just, just can't. as much as I hate string into the newbie eyes of steve, you just can't get rid of him. just so far up you think you hate him, but really deep down, you love Steve, it just reminds you of your first steps into Minecraft, when you first changed your skin, and all that. Honestly, Mojang... good idea, but maybe a choice? I'm not letting go of Steve THAT easily. you should be able to choose to be Alex or Steve when you make your account, but Mojang, you ruined a huge part of Minecraft, you just did.
I was thinking when you select your account you pick " Female " or " Male "

Steve is an icon, I don't see why changing him is needed/wanted.

They are not going to take Steve away.They will make 50 % of new players(without a skin) Alex and 50% of new players Steve.

Only on Alex's skin. I'm assuming eventually you'll have the option to choose between the male and female default skin (Steve/Alex) and the male/female body (smaller arms)

Well , you can, just visit mojang website and they have a download for steve skin (at the bottom of 1.8 update)
Apparently it's not the default skin - default is Steve but you can choose in Account Settings. That's what I've heard anyway.
I agree. There should be a button in the "Options" menu when you pause Minecraft.

I think it's cute! She looks so adorable and small. :3 I wouldn't mind using the default skin if it was this one.
It's 50/50, she's the new female default while Steve is the male default.

it's not a female skin it's unisex, people just think it is female due to long hair. Also it's not replacing the steve skin, half the default skins will be steve the other half alex unless I misunderstanding something. Also this is the DEFAULT skin so it's easy to just change skins if you don't want it, most longtime players have skins, this isn't going to effect you.

I hate Steve....But I hate this even more.... even though im a girl, it doesn't appeal to me.
It could still be a male, since Alex is also a boy's name and the skin kinda looks like a guy with long hair

I like it, I liked Steve too but tbh, doesn't really affect me much xD I got mah straw skin.

Others are saying this is real, so I'm going to believe it. I don't think getting rid of Steve is something that Mojang should do. I mean, Steve is the face of minecraft. He's the chosen one. The hero that can defeat the ender dragon. The majority of minecrafters are male, but there are lots of female gamers that could easily change their skin if they wanted do. Also, look at it from the merchandise angle. Mojang has already made money off of the plastic diamond armor Steve figures. If there is a new default character, Mojang will most likely make new molds of those. Causing there to be more sales.

3 arm width will be optional in the next prerelease. Currently it's not which will be fixed. 3 arm width has nothing to do with gender anyone can use it with thier skin.

I can't tell what's true and what's real. Some people are saying it will be random, other are saying you can choose, and others are saying cya Steve, we'll miss you.
It's okay, man. They wouldn't get rid of the face of Minecraft... Just another skin, Steve will be kept.

I don't know why some people are being negative about this. I think it's a cool new addition. The only thing I don't like is that it's randomly chosen. Like most people are saying, I hope in the future that you'll be able to pick Steve or Alex for your default skin.

3 width arms will be choosable, whether you will be alex or steve for default skin is not. Read here for the actual info.

This sucks. What if someone's game is stuffed up and all people see are the default skin? What if a person with the Alex skin is a boy?
