I think you will still require patches for HD fonts but im not 100% sure

Just want to add, it's pixels, not bits. Minecraft uses 16x16 pixel images for the face of each block, item, etc. When you try to use an 8x, 32x, or other size pack, Minecraft doesn't understand how to read the files, so the blocks come out looking funny.

OptiFine and MCPatcher check the images in your texture pack to see what size they are, and run different code for any packs that don't use the standard 16x16px images.

If an 8x pack does work without a patcher, then it is in fact a 16x pack in disguise.

In terms of bits, each pixel is made up of 32, known as 32bpp (bits per pixel.) 8 bits of each pixel represent the amount of red in that color, 8 bits representing green, and 8 bits representing blue. The last 8 bits indicate how transparent, or see-through that pixel will be.

If you open up a texture pack, you will find images of all sizes. The most recognizable one is terrain.png, which is a bunch of 16x16 pixel images arranged in rows and columns. Starting with Minecraft 1.5, every 16x16 image will be in its own file.

Hope you found this post informative! =)

Everything above 16*16, so everything between 32 bit and 512 bit, either needs MCpatcher or Opinfine. (ironicly some 8*8 packs need a patcher too)

32x (bit) or higher resolutions in Minecraft require either Optifine or McPatcher (use whichever you find easier unless it specifies using one over the other). As for 32*32hd I am not sure what that means. Just try Optifine/McPatcher, if not try google. Google is you best friend (followed closely by pmc) in finding the answer to unknown problems.
