I don't personally condone most of the (less than useful) mobs that Mojang has added over the past several updates, with the exception of guardians and maaaybe phantoms (they amuse me). This new mob is more useful than the others, but seeing as that is not very hard to surpass, I would say that Mojang is still severely lacking in update material that is actually useful to me in Minecraft day to day life. I've been disappointed in them for a while (ever since they were bought by Microsoft pretty much) and I don't think that's changing anytime soon.
4
weird, because phantoms are the most useless recent mob I can think of... well, hostile mob anyway.
2
Exactly, only reason is they actually are good at their job, unlike most other mobs which are easy to shrug off. They are also fun bow targets.
1
theyre not useless
1
not completely, but they're not as useful as other recent mobs IMO.
2
I think phantoms are useful I love slow fall potions when using an elytra ever tried that? The distance is cool.
Also I like the new concepts of the nether, finally netherite, something that outclasses diamond even though it's a pain to get there is finally something above diamond.
In other things the nether might be my new home. Planning on making a map to where you can only live in the nether. Think of the challenges tho, finally a challenge!

The one time I tried that was during a dragon fight and the knockback kept putting me out of reach in midair. After being tossed around like a beach ball for a while, I eventually ended up with the death message: "experienced kinetic energy whilst escaping Ender Dragon" upon impact with a pillar. Not my best moment.
2/10 would not try again (lmao).
Ah yes, more added complications to my simple game.
If anything, the nether is more hospitable now. rip challenge.

Oh, you play Minecraft for the challenge? Try 2b2t. It's honestly the hardest server I've ever played. Worth it though, imo

I don't feel like waiting in a queue for 3 hours. :p

I get that Minecraft originally had Creepers and that Mojang is attempting to add other oddball looking mobs with strange features. BUT the Creeper was an oopsie-pig programmer art, and it can stay, but they really do not need to continue adding more mobs that look like they were spawned straight out of oblivion by accident. 😭
With the strider, I like the concept but I dislike the design. Already seen a cute texture for it pop up though and I am pretty sure something cute can be done with the model. 👍

Not every mob needs to be cute, and I think it’s irritating if too many are. otherwise, I agree.

Reasons I don't like the Strider:
- It doesn't match the feel of minecraft.
- If it lives around/on lava shouldn't it's texture look more lava/magma like?
- Why does it have the haircut of an elderly drunk hipster?
- It's texture is a bit too textured for a creature of it's size.
- How does one walk on lava?
- I think the game devs took a looked at other fiction based games with a hell theme & tried to add a bit of that to the nether.
- Honestly it just looks strange, change my mind.

I totally understand this. This is basically why I don't like the Strider.
I also just realized why it probably doesn't look lava/magma like. Doesn't their feet kind of look like Basalt or Netherite boots? Either one. But it still doesn't explain how they can walk through lava if it's pouring on top of them

These are also many of the problems present in 90% of all mobs from 1.10 onward.
1
If they do officially add this, I think it should be more like a water skater type of creature
6
I don't overly love it's design either, but here are my responses in order.
- The feel of Minecraft is fluid and easily changed. I'm really not too sure why that's an issue.
- Not every nether mob needs to be fire/lava based.
- I don't know. as we've agreed, the skin is a little weird.
- Do you mean too high-res?
- Buoyancy. The strider is probably very light, I'd estimate 30-60 lbs.
- Big deal. It's definitely more original a concept than some mc mobs. just saying.
- Texture packs exist.

I love the concept, and I honestly don't hate the design! I really really just wish it wasn't a cube. Maybe they should add the lower jaw and have it pop out more.
7
If you guys want to check it out, I did a slight redesign of the Strider [ here ].
3
i like your redesign a lot more than the original
11
I'm going to differ from the majority here and be thankful that there is now a way that I can cross lava oceans without risking falling off my bridges and losing everything..
4
Auto Basalt maker tho
2
elytra, ender pearls if you're good, oh and just walking around the dang thing
3
Too much work, and elytra and ender pearls don't really fall from the sky in a cheatless survival world.
2
Skills take work.
2
True enough, it's just that usually when I go to the nether I don't have OP gear yet.
2
OP gear does not equal skills.

In the middle.
The concept is awesome, the design is horrendous.

I feel like they need to be more like water skaters
2
That is a very interesting idea, but keep in mind that lava is much thicker than water. Any creature that moved on top of lava should probably be somewhat slow.
1
thats why im thinking crimson and warped boats, they still work but they move you really slow in the lava. And it just finishes the wood set too
2
Nah, too cheap, and Netherite boats would be too expensive. I think striders are a good compromise.
5
Finally, I can cross the lava by riding my old physics teacher.
Oh, dear lord, that came out wrong!
Yeah, the texture looks off due to its higher resolution, but I like the idea.
In my mind, the legs are non-flammable and just extend down whenever it walks on lava, keeping the actual creature safe. It's just that the model doesn't show that.
If we look at the nether's properties, especially the implied heat, this thing makes sense when thinking about what a native nether creature might look like (as opposed to a pig- or slime-based one). Remember that the Blaze is also extremely odd. These are pretty much what I'd imagine silicon-based life to be like, which makes sense in a place filled with lava and extreme heat.

I actually really like it. It's goofy, unique, and useful. However, I think the legs should be longer, because when I hear "strider" I think of something with long legs that has long strides, not a frowning cube with stubby legs.
1
What am I looking at again?
6
I can get where people are coming from saying that it doesn't match the look and feel of MC. Something about the level of detail actually reminds me a bit of the old human mob in a way, but overall i don't mind it.
5
I kind of agree...

i wish he had reeeeaaaaly long legs

You guys don't like the Strider because it's ugly? Well, the girls actually look like this.
They don't go in the lava so they aren't scorched.
EDIT: oof the picture isn't working

lol, that's not bad.

IT'S VERY CUTE.
On a scale of 0 - 10 , where 0 is "Blob-fish out of water ugly" and 10 is "OH MY GOD THIS IS A CREATURE FROM HEAVEN"....
I rate it a 9. Pandas are rated a 10. Pandas are always the cutest.
