4kx4k is a pretty good, easy to use size. You'll find you have plenty of space once you load it up.

you could use a map ranging from 4kx4k to 11kx11k but do note. the 11k map is 2.95 gigs well for the one i made.

I think the size really depends on the complexity of the map. If it's a very simple map you'll need to make it larger, if it's something more complex and adventurous you can make a much smaller map.

16k x 16k personal total minimum, perhaps hard to find custom maps at that size... or larger

Players can get across a map pretty quickly. They can also get lost and discover things 'out of sequence'. So its a tough call. RGP all depends on the scenario, the map can be almost any size, as long as the tasks you set the players keep them involved or in any single place often and long enough. A lot also depends on whether a map is survival or adventure mode.
