Offline isn't legal, strictly speaking. People without license may have various reasons, but the fact remains that they are not 'real' users, and by rights people should be able to make the relatively marginal investment that is buying the game. You'll get that community, but I'm not sure I'd want it. This is as someone who has been around many offline servers in older days.

The bit of security paranoia that comes with cracked gets old pretty quick to me, too.

I prefer offline mode because there is a huge amount of people without license, too.
