I used 3 before in my life before frickin' updates happened. Christmas craft, Trail Mix (Epic but makes you build limit lower), and Too many items. I would suggest TMI.

OptiFine, GLSL with DoubleBubble shaders, Zombe's Mod (for see through blocks when redstoning), CameraStudio and Single Player Commands. I've got MagicLauncher and I have different profiles for different tasks.

What mods should I install that aren't entirely big?

I install mods every once in a while, but I mostly just play the Void's Wrath modpack. It's awesome. The Void's Wrath is based around DivineRPG. There's also a modpack based around the Aether II on the launcher and a modpack made by one of their friends that is just big and has no theme.

I actually almost stopped playing regular minecraft a while ago and switched to FTB/Tekkit. The most extreme modded one had 102 different mods added and my computer still runs it without lag (although the loading time is a pain in the ****)

None. Some people may find it really simple to install mods, but all I see are 1s and 0s....

I highly recommend Magiclauncher. With that, you only have to put the .zip file of the mods in the mod folder (to be found here Users--> [whatever the name of your account is]-->AppData-->Roaming--..minecraft.
Then put the mods in the modding folder, and start Magiclauncher. Go to Setup and sort them into internal and external mods (if you've got them in the wrong section, it'll say internal mod or external mod. Then you can place it in the appropriate slot. Tick the mods you want to be active, and start it up.
alternatively, try the Techniclauncher. Even if it has not given proper credit to the modders, you could compensate for that by doing so yourself (in whatever manner you choose). Good luck with the mods!

i just use Feed The beast. Its 80 mods in one pack . When i lag i just turn my render distance to normal or short and it seems to do the trick

Just optifine. I usually manage to screw up minecraft when I try to install mods by myself. How, I don't know, it really isn't that difficult OTL
