Help with creating a skin

So I made a pretty nice skin with 30 downloads just today, and I want to add some stuff to it, with GIMP and paint.net but I just can't get the stone sword to fit the little image, I want it on the back of the image yet every time I paste it over, even with a new layer It's a giant image and I can't crop it with out it looking distorted or shrinking the skin as well, so what I'm wondering is how I can add images like stone swords, compasses, etc onto a skin.

You cant, since its pixel art you need to draw it yourself, you can of course draw it by only looking at the picture and make it as similar as possible,

Are you sure? There's literally no program that will let me copy and paste the sword onto the same page as the skin, let me shrink it and position it on his back??
