Changing the minecraft source codes?

hello again Planet Minecraft! i am still struggling with modding, how do i change the minecraft blocks,items and entities code into a readable one i can edit? and how do i edit using notepad and the other nessacary applications the attack power, movement and other things like that? Or should i learn how to make my own entities instead of editing the original source? please help.
