There is a way to do it without committing anything illegal.
Look up MCNostalgia on the minecraft forums, it will restore previous versions legally. You can even undo the installation. Very simple tool to use.

In your .minecraft/bin folder you will have all the old versions of jars you have played. It will be called minecraft-1.73.jar

I never see those in my bin folder
OK so to get 1.7.3 back just use a minecraft downgrader if you can find one.

Use the Digiex Minecraft Version Changer, it'll let you play any version of Minecraft ( Alpha too!) and you can play both 1.7 and 1.8 at the same time without replacing jar files.

How to install: Open your Minecraft launcher.
Click options.
Go to install directory
Go to /Bin/
Delete minecraft.jar
Replace it with THIS minecraft.jar
If you ever want to go back to 1.8,
Open your Minecraft Launcher.
Clock options.
Click Force Update (It should say "Will Force!")
Log in
