How to install a game mod?

How do I install a game Mod? I downloaded merkgamers, so how do I install it? BTW- Is it permanent or can I restore it back to original later?

If you are on windows then do the following:
1: Go to 'Start'
2: Search for "run"
3: Open "run" and type in %appdata%
4: Open ".minecraft"
5: Open the bin folder
6: Right click "minecraft.jar" and mouse-over "Open With" and select WinRar
7: Delete the "META-INF" folder and put in the class files you downloaded from the mod.
Note: you will need a modloader if the mod says so (usually linked in the post)
P.s if you are not on WIndows 7 then run should just be on the Start panel.
