I have a question. If I made my own shading template, and used that on multiple skins to shade them, would that be classified as remixing/part picking, or does it still count as original?

Seems like you'll be fine as long as you are making different skins.
Different as in actually different, not just recoloring/changing one feature/etc

Shading templates are fine, people use some other guys shading template all the time. Most of those skins look super rushed and REALLY ugly though. But yea, using your own shading template is fine.
