Site Loading Errors ~ Uploading Media; Loading Pages

When using this website, I find difficulty in loading any page of the site, or uploading media, sometimes. Occasionally, it will enter a "laggy" phase, where I cannot load a page without text resembling "Error: MySQL has gone away", or something to that effect.
Otherwise, I may find great difficulty uploading media (namely, skins), as it takes an infinitely long amount of time to complete: the project will be "saving" for an indefinitely long period, and I will not be able to upload the skins (or other media) properly.
As a result, I may try multiple times with my user page having several of the same upload - these submissions are corrupt, and note that the link is invalid, or a moderator/myself have taken it down.
Could someone please suggest a reason as to why this is happening, and if possible, what I can do to fix or prevent it in the future. And pardon my multiple uploads; they are a cause of this very dilemma.
