Tekkit is a mod-pack that includes a lot of mods such as ComputerCraft, Industrial Craft, Build Craft, etc.
It even has TooManyItems, though the TooManyItems mod in Tekkit seems to be edited.
You don't need to install it into your regular Minecraft, it can be used separate from your regular Minecraft-game.
The mod-packs that the Technic Launcher includes are: Tekkit, (Which is what you asked about.) Technic, (A little different than Tekkit.) The YogBox, (A mod-pack made by the YogsCast.) Hack / Mine, (An RPG-like thing, looks more RPG kind-of when using the included SMP's Revival texturepack.) and Vanilla. (Which is actually regular Minecraft with no mods at all.)

Tekkittt......hmm....
is Tekkit is a Multiplayer compatible Mod Pack for the popular Minecraft game. It is put together and maintained by the Technic Pack team. The mods added by Tekkit introduce a large amount of options to automate and industrialize Minecraft worlds and more options to power it. Some mods include Industrial Craft, Buildcraft, RedPower and Equivalent Exchange.

Basically it adds more useful stuff to it. Quarries are one (a machine that mines) Computers you can write codes on, and using multiple things you can make factorys (alot of machines put together to make a item, i.e, nano armor.) it also adds more tools, armor, weapons, and blocks.
*Facepalms* Dude you know how Minecraft is medieval and stuff? Tekkit is like that but with technology as well.
Like what do you mean lots of mods?
Minecraft on steroids (lots of mods) pretty much
