Prologue

It was a calm, quiet night in the land of Azyros on the planet of Orthos. All was silent in the streets of Beacon City. Its residents were sleeping and the livestock were grazing in their fields. All was at peace. But that peace was about to change forever.

A violent shake of the ground awoke the entire city in an instant. The Aspects, Dremm Inferniclaw and his brother, Endar, rushed out of the city hall, where they lived and worked, onto an outside balcony.

“What is going o–By Drakkon!”, said Dremm.

A massive blast of lava has just spewed out of the nearby bay.

“Dremm!”, said Endar. “Stop whatever is happening. I'm going to get civilians to safety.”

  “On it.”, said Dremm.

Both Draconians, who resembled elves but sported the horns, scales, and slitted pupils of dragons, leapt off the balcony into thin air, and transformed into great red and teal dragons in a single flash of light. Dremm watched as Endar descended to the city streets, then turned his attention to the lava exploding all around him. He channeled his Aspectral powers through his breath, breathing a great ray of frost that cooled any lava it touched. But even then, more lava erupted from the ground beneath him.

“Ugh! Why is this happening!?”, Dremm shouted in a deeper, more draconic voice.

He suddenly heard Endar's voice in his head, telepathically communicating with him: “I've got most of the civilians to safety. How's the lava?”

“It's no use. I can't stop it, more and more just keeps coming. I'm heading back.” He flew back toward the now-tilting Beacon City.

“Dremm,” Endar said. “It's more than just lava. The continent, it's breaking apart. Look!”

He turned and saw that a great fissure was forming to the east, with water from Loch Aethereon filling it.

  “You don't think..” said Dremm.

“That Azyr's dead? It's the only explanation.”

“Then there is nothing we can do.”

“No.”, said Endar. We can still get civilians to safer ground.

  “Agreed,” said Dremm.

They assumed their dragon forms and set out locating civilians and teleporting them to safety. They were almost finished when great jets of lava spewed forth into the Nexus District, the wealthiest district of the city. Dremm saw a single person, a young lady, floating on a tiny rock in a sea of lava.

“Hold on, I'm coming! He said as he flew down. Dremm, in the haste of the situation, cast a spell without thinking. A bronze sigil appeared under her feet, then she was teleported away. At this moment Endar arrived. They both returned to the ground.

“Where did you send her?” He asked.

“I have no idea, Dremm replied. “I cast the spell so quickly I didn't know what I was doing until I did it. There was a bronze sigil, though.”

“Damn it, Dremm! What did I say about meddling with time?! Endar sighed.

“I suppose the damage has been done. If we're lucky, you sent her forward, past all this mess.”

Dremm looked around to see Beacon City slowly sinking beneath water and lava.

“Dremm,” Endar said. “We've done all we can.”

“ I wish I could have stopped this. First the Shadowray, and now this! UGH! Damn it, Endar, what good is an Aspect who cannot protect his people!?

“Dremm, it's okay. We'll take refuge in the Rift and assess the situation when it's stable.” He opened a portal as he said this. Dremm sighed. They stepped through, knowing this would be the last time they walked the land of Azyros.
