    I was watching this yesterday morning. It's Iron Maiden performing at Rock in Rio 2001, on the last night of the Brave New World Tour. This became their next live album (Rock in Rio).

    Alright, it’s time to rant about Dance of Death.

    Ok, so why am I doing this? Because I friggin’ hate the album cover for Iron Maiden’s 2003 album, Dance of Death. If you don’t know what it looks like I’ll put the images underneath this, but let me talk first. Now, the songs are good, hell, “No More Lies” is my favorite Iron Maiden song (even if the one I like is from Death on the Road), but that album cover is horrible. For starters, it’s (mostly) CG-rendered, which is a departure from the drawn covers of Iron Maiden’s previous albums, and yes, I know the covers for their last two albums look more live-action and realistic than the others, but those actually look good! To understand my rage, let’s look to original cover for Dance of Death, which depicts (and this is all artwork and not rendering) Eddie in grim reaper robes holding a scythe, with cultists of some sort in the background. (Also, it looks like Eddie’s asking to dance based on the way he’s posed.) Now, this design was made by David Patchett, who requested that they don’t credit him since the final cover was an unfinished version. (voice gets angrier) However, our good friend Rod Smallwood the band manager thought the cover was empty, so he went ahead and hired some guy from IronMaiden.com to use a program called Poser to design characters to surround Eddie, and this guy comes up with the most random things! Also, did I mention that the humans are all in underwear (for the men) or a bra and underwear (for the women), and I think one girl (the one next to Eddie) is actually topless and covering her breasts with her hands! How is that appropriate?! Answer: it isn’t! Anyway, the guy gave Patchett the rough designs and asked him to add the skin and mask textures, but he didn’t like the end result! You know what the good thing about all this is? Bruce actually said years later that the cover was embarrassing, and he was right. I bet you I could find 10 Iron Maiden album cover ranking lists, and I bet you on all 10 of them, Dance of Death is ranked worst! All in all, what I’m trying to say is, the cover for Dance of Death sucks and is a disgrace to all Iron Maiden covers, and they should’ve stuck with the original with the cultists and Grim Reaper Eddie, even if it did look empty.

    Also, I know I put the unused cover art on my album covers blog, but if I see an entry in this jam that is a recreation of the official Dance of Death album cover, I will disqualify it.
