Well, for one thing the realism isn't exactly good. Personally I prefer being able to explain why something happens, rather than leaving it ambiguous for the sake of the story. Another thing is the smoothness. I noticed that you depend almost entirely on a certain type of sentence, and that their length isn't much varied. I'd change up the grammatical structure a bit: maybe combine some sentences here and there, and use verbals a bit more. To improve your writing style, I advise analyzing Glacial and IGEBM's writings to see how they do it.

I'm afraid you won't place very high, but that was actually better than it could have been.

Yeah, that's a good attitude to have. Either way the kingdom will have some pretty good lore when all is said and done.

I don't really care, actually

As long as I'm confident in my own abilities as a writer, others' works that may be better than mine don't worry me

(especially when I think said story is awesome as heck)

The word limit is in place to encourage entrants to create a thorough and detailed story, which is the main point of the jam.

I cannot, due to the minimum word count. He still has nearly 50 days left in which to lengthen it, however, so as long as he gets it past 1k words by then, it'll be fine.
