Firstly, thankyou for making this Post. It is rare to actually see someone willing to put the effort in.
Well, currently I am working on two projects. One is my own server startup and the other I picked up in December.
The Server I began work on in December is owned by a gentlemen with the username Willbo_123. He had put up a post on Planet Minecraft, asking if anyone wanted to help out with his struggling server. I put myself into a position much like yours and contacted him.
We have since been working towards a full revamp which has seen a few past players return, new players join and is slowly becoming a more desirable server. Currently, we consider the Survival Server as being in an 'Alpha' state of development, players are able to join and play, but it is not complete.
In the last week, we have begun working on the Minigames server. This looks to be a slow process, mainly because it's been difficult to find fun games that are up to date with the lastest version. I also hope to do more work on Survival, adding some features and getting it to 'Beta', soon.
I am from Australia and am the same age as you. Wilbo is from the UK as well, but he has some years on you and I. This won't be a server that shuts down next month, as Wilbo is older, has a job and has paid for hosting, well into the future.
The moment you log into the server, you should be filled with a sense that a community belongs here. Currently at peak, we get 6 to 12 players online. Otherwise, it might be a few, but often none at all. Although the server has been online for about a year or so, the community is very much under-developed and still has a lot of growing space.

http://slashminecraft.enjin.com/As for my own Server, it's been an on and off process for the last six months. I've got a really great direction I want to take it, which is kind of original, but still familiar to players.
I really like servers that are Survival based at their root, but I really like adding those small details that lift's it above the traditional style of Minecraft and gives players something to work towards.
I would really like to work with you, either on my own server or certainly with Wilbo on SlashMC . I believe it would be a very strong and innovative trio.
