Subaru’s self-hatred in both season 1 and 2 stems from him confusing his self-worth with his usefulness. He believed he had to be "useful" to those around him just to be deserving of their love.
Echidna attempted to manipulate Subaru by taking advantage of this weakness. however, through the intervention of Satella, Minerva, and the other witches, he is told that his life has inherent value. He learns that rbd is more than just a tool to be used repeatedly until he loses his sense of self, and that his life still holds meaning even when he fails.
Arc 4 is ultimately about subaru realizing that rbd isn't just a tool, his worth isn't tied to his utility, and he must rely on others to truly move forward in life.
