I think there was once a spout mod that let you do that, before spout went funny.

That doesn't break the rules though, does it?
The rule against x-ray packs stops people using them on a server to gain an unfair advantage... you can't use that mod in multiplayer, so you can't gain an advantage with it... you want to use it in SSP I don't see a problem, you're not bothering anyone :/

"You should be able to post the packs because servers should be better prepared to stop them".
I call shenanigans!

Now that Notch has given modding the "go ahead" I wouldn't say it's hacking to decompile the .jar, though if you do that's fair enough. Regardless; writing a mod to add a massive death machine that kills everyone periodically is still better than an x-ray pack, because it doesn't give any one player an unfair advantage and then ruin it for all the other players without said advantage.

The point I've noticed is that regardless of how illegal it is, most decent people won't play it because they think it's illegal, rather than it actually being illegal. All in all; the fact you're in a Minecraft forum looking to build a Minecraft clone without doing the not-legally-necessary-but-polite-anyway-thing of thanking Mojang causes people to be suspicious of you. Raging about that won't help because it isn't about how legal it is, it's about how legal your player base thinks it is.

People don't seem to be getting it.... If you don't like a feature; don't use it. None of them are forced upon you, you just don't do it. Don't like the end? Don't go there! Don't like potions? Don't brew any!! Don't like enchanting?! DON'T DO IT!

Put simply; every argument I've seen so far has been "WAA WAA I DON'T LIKE THIS FEATURE!!". Considering they're building THEIR game, not yours, tough luck. If you really have a problem with it; don't build the blocks! Don't like snow golems? Don't make any. Don't like the new coloured wood? Throw it away. You're not being forced to use the new things, but you are whining like butt-hurt babies that the choice is there and the game is constantly growing.

Thank you! Exactly! You only have to look at FyreUK's newest builds to see how much of a change the additions make. Or the new "stargate system" made with the controller block? Or tripwire? Or generating temples? Jungle biomes? Cats? Fact o' the matter is; don't like it then don't update, or don't build it. Just stop complaining.

I don't mean using the same code, there are quite a few places minecraft could be rewritten from the ground up to be much better and faster (wolves, anyone?).... but the point is they're making "a new minecraft based on minecraft", using minecraft mods on a minecraft website. Common courtesy would demand they at least ask, even if Mojang has a history of not caring.

So you're going to remake minecraft to be exactly the same as it is now, but with mods written into the source. I hope you've at least asked Mojang out of politeness....

Because the API will make it easier to do, make a magnitude greater number of mods compatible without damnable modloader, and allow far more to be done with SSP and SMP.

Also; don't like it don't upgrade? I've yet to see him add something I didn't think was a good idea, Notch trusts Jeb with the development and I think Jeb has done a fantastic job so far.
