Here's advice comming from someone who had to learn programming by himself: learn the basics first. Don't jump into modding tutorials just yet, because you'll end up copying and pasting, without trying to understand what you're doing. Here is a small list of what you should do:
- Avoid Youtube videos. Videos are a great tool to convey information, but most tutorials contain outdated information, bad programming habits, and they can be frustrating. Some channels like TheNewBoston aren't so bad, but you have to be cautious.
- Find courses online. Seriously, just Google something generic like "Java Tutorial", and look for reputable sites. A tutorial on PMC is not a reputable source, sorry.
- Understand everything you write. The moment you copy and paste something without understanding is the moment you've decided to stop improving. Ask yourself: what does this line do?
- Be patient. I've spent hours on stupid bugs, so take your time and review your code.
- Name your variables correctly. This will help you when you need to work on your real projects, as your code will be easier to read. It's not a bad habit to go back in your code and change variable names when needed.
- Your code won't be perfect, but you should always seek to improve it.
Hopefully this helped!
Good luck.
