It's not just you!
I've had similar experiences, in the sense that I feel like I may be insulting them.
However, I found that viewing it as a secondary name (not quite, but similar) can be helpful (this goes for any pronouns, regardless of what they are. my mind works in silly ways). Really, the "main" pronouns are just...words. And neopronouns are just words that differ from the "main" ones.

Try to keep in mind that you're doing what does make them happy and remind yourself that there's nothing wrong with what you're doing (because there isn't!). Hopefully, reassurance/reminding yourself can help with feeling guilty.

I'm really, really glad you're not using this as a reason to hate on neopronouns/people who use neopronouns ;o; very refreshing to see. I'm glad there are still people like you, warms my heart.


edit: to add onto this, i have some friends (online) who use neopronouns. reminding myself that it makes them happy & makes them feel validated helps a lot.

This post made me think of a video by a Transformers YouTuber I like that was about how a character in Transformers: Prime, Laserbeak, is commonly treated as a drone by his comrades for being small and spending his time on his larger partner's chest to be deployed for missions, and he briefly talks about how almost every character calls him "it" instead of "him"
