I've had the same problem in the end islands of a world of mine, chunks wouldn't load, it was impossible to die, place and break blocks and use commands, and when logging out the game would freeze, forcing me to close Minecraft every time. I would be very interested to find a solution as well.

If you think dynamic lighting is the main feature, you are actually scratching the surface.

Optifine brings many optimizations and performance settings, you can actually double your FPS using it. Also, there are many packs here on planetminecraft that rely on it, such as Visual Enchantments by CiscuLog, Creature Variety Pack by DraminOver, all those packs that show your tools’ durability making the texture gradually more broken and lots of naming-based packs (such as naming items and mobs and getting custom textures). You can also enable texture rotation and randomization to have more natural textures all around the world, and connected textures to make glass, bookshelves, logs etc. connect. You can also enable 2x and 4x screenshot size to make huge high definition screenshots. There are also lots of other features, these are just the ones I use
