Tobiano is considered a type of pinto pattern, it is caracteristic for the white legs and colored face and spots on the chest and crotch area. There are several expressions of the markings, ranging from a few white marks to nearly white with some smaller areas with color.
The markings usually resemble as if the horse had white paint thrown on it's back.
