Cordyceps (from Greek kordyle meaning "club" and cephali meaning "head") is a genus of parasitic fungi consisting of about 600 species, each one specializing in just one prey species. The root-like mycelium invades and eventually replaces the host's tissue, with the spore pod erupting from the host's brain and skull when the fungus is ready to reproduce. Cordyceps also influences the host's behavior, essentially controlling the host's mind and driving them to climb as high as possible so the spores can disperse even farther. The host dies as the spore pod begins to emerge.
