One of the bloodiest wars known to mankind ended 100 years ago today. Millions of men, women and children died whilst fighting, as civilian casualties or because of diseases. We call this war World War I or the "Great War". This war was meant to be the war that ended all wars but as we all know, this didn't happen and many more lives were lost during combat. World War I has already disappeared from living memory a long time ago so it is our job to remember it; the war, the people, the victims, the facts and the grief.
Even though it has been a century since World War I ended, the scars of the war still remain and especially in France. Every village has a monument honouring their fallen inhabitants and parts of the French landscape are still littered with old ammunition, trenches and even poisonous gas. Some parts of the country are still off-limits because of potential live ammunition or gas, over 100 years after they've been used and they will still be dangerous for decades to come.
With this project, I wanted to combine all those aspects in one map. I took my previous WWI map and decided to remake the same place 100 years later. You can still see where most of the trenches were, the village is completely destroyed with only the foundations and street signs still visible and a military cemetery and visitor centre have been made. Another part of the map is sealed off because of potentially dangerous ammunition.
Enjoy the map and please keep remembering World War I.
Suggestion: Download the battlefield map together with this map in order to compare the two and see what has changed.
