Inspired by the book House Of Leaves, I've decided to build the labyrinth house. The labyrinth itself will be about a mile square, built out of obsidian (inventory mod). Outside will be a quaint little house connected to the maze. Inside of it consists of 64 41 floors of 3x3 rooms and 1x1 hallways, very dimly lit. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to build the spiral staircase or the great hall the height limit makes it really hard to get the same effect as each makes in the book.
This is my first "mega project" and I'm not quite sure how this will end. I'll try to update this as much as possible, but I need to figure out a new way of getting pictures of my maps....

Phase 1 100%
Phase 1 includes outlining the walls of the "maze" nothing technical, just trying to keep a straight line. Which is kind of hard when you have to judge where the block is when it is at least 30 blocks in the air...

Phase 2 0%
Phase 2 is clearing out a square mile down to the bedrock. still nothing hard. Except what I've explored of the map is has lot's of water and the only way I only how to get rid of standing water is to block it up and delete it.
Phase 2a 100%
Because this is such a huge project I'm going to break it up to more manageable and manageable chunks. so This is the first part of the water phase, in phase 2a I will be filling obsidian under all the blocks that are just over the water level so in either phase 2b, or phase 2aa (not sure what I'm going to name it yet, I can start filling in all of the water, so I can eventually mine all of it out...
Phase 2b 0%
Phase 2b is basically just filling in all of the water with sand, nothing complicated just long tedious work. The more work I do on this project the more I realize I have to do....

Phase 3 0%
The hardest and probably longest phase of this undertaking, is the main building phase. This is where I build 3x3 rooms and 1x1 hallways, for a square mile, for 64 floors...

Phase 4 0%
The other building phase. In this phase I will build the house connected the the labyrinth. I'll try to build it like it's described in the book, but if anyone has read House of Leaves. They will know how difficult it is to read that book, I considered it a "mega project"...

Phase 5 0%
If I go into phase 5 it will be building the great hall and spiral staircase.

Update #1 Friday, February 25, 2011 4:18PM
I know that there is a feature just for updates, but I feel like they won't be read if I only use that, I will still use the feature. It will pretty much be a copy-and-paste of what is written here.
Progress is coming slowly... I'm almost done outlining were the labyrinth will be. I will update a picture of my progress(if it will upload...) But while walking around the edge of a very tall mountain I fell to my death about 3 miles away....
Also I wrote the phases of my project to give people a better idea of what I plan on building.

Update #2 February 26, 2011 4:47PM
After 45 minutes of walking I finally got to the end of the path, about 3.5 miles away from my spawn. Walking all this way has really put some perspective into this... Well, better get back to work,,,

Update #3 February 26 2011 5:15PM
I hope people don't get annoyed at how often I update this but hey. There problem, not mine. I can now see the end of phase 1, yayy!!!!

Update #4 February 27 2011 11:21AM
Phase 1 is complete and phase 2a is a little harder than expected, I always forget to see how many bubbles I have left while underwater, and a couple times have gotten really close to drowning, either way, progress is coming.

Update #5 February 27 8:18PM
I'm just under halfway done with Phase 2a, Progress is coming. But of course it's pretty slow. I could use a program and clear all of this down to the bedrock in a few minutes but, I'd rather not. I'd rather do this project cheating as least as possible.

Update #6 March 2 8:58PM
I know I haven't updated in a few days, but I felt that it was pointless updating until Phase 2a was finished, and I'm updating to tell you Phase 2a is finished... It took shorter than expected, the only part that gave me any problem, didn't really give me any problems. It was just at least half a mile of deep water, at least 10 metres deep. But now on to Phase 2b, where I fill in all of the water inside of this mile square with sand, this should be the first major part of the project, then after I can start mining.

Update #7 March 5 6:13PM
I'm just updating to say that It's not worth updating everyday when I'm njust doing the same thing over and over again, I'm still filling in nwater with sand and it takes along time. I'm also updating to say that nI'm not going to have much time coming up to play Minecraft. I have nfinals coming up. So hopefully this project isn't forgotten about by then time I'm done...nn n

Update #8 March 18 5:38 PM
So finals are over, and I'm slowly getting back in the Minecraft mood. And more importantly, progress on this thing... I still have lot's to do before any real progress is made. I am trying to figure out how to upload my tectonicus map of this project on a website somewhere, I don't have any money to set up my own domain, soI guess I'll just keep looking... Anyways, I'm just updating to tell people that this isn't dead.

I updated today! Read it.

Update May 8 11:20 AM
So while looking at my statistics, I found out that I've used 25,567 blocks of sand. That's alot of sand, I think it might be glitched. But either way I've used a lot of sand. Also, I've mined through 562 blocks of ice, it's used up about half of my diamond pick axe...

Update #9 June 20 2:53 PM
Sorry for the lack of updates but that would of just been really redundant. I don't go against my word and took out all of the water with MCEdit (sorry for anyone who wanted to see it through vanilla), and I'm tempted to go and take everything out with MCEdit. Also for anyone who knows how to use the program "Google Sketchpad" with the Minecraft plugin installed please send me a tutorial on it. Thanks. Even through it's summer my schedule is still pretty packed. I have a tad bit more free time then I did. But it's not much. I want to be able to start building by the time Minecraft comes out. But if I use MCEdit it can done today.... Tell me what you want to see me do.

Update #10 June 21 1:11 PM
I'm uploading the world just to show you the progress. Basically. A large hole.... Have fun.

June 28 2:17 PM
I always expected the actual building part of this to be the easiest part, boy I was wrong..... I've got to the point where I was happy with how a few chunks worth of maze look, only to realize that I couldn't do it over a large scale.... I doubt this will be done by the time Minecraft gets out of beta. I might need to extend it to the end of the year....

September 3 8:28 PM
Well, sorry for the lack of updates but my summer has been really busy, a lot more so than I expected it to be. Out of the last 3 months I've had about a week and a half to myself. But, the good news. I have completed a major chunk of the maze. But I've also been playing through Super Hostile Sea of Flames, and I've started a new project with a little less work than this one. When I figure out a name for it I'll put it on PMC. I'm sorry this is going so slow. But I would work faster if more people encourage me.

November 19 5:49 PM
I have completely erased what I've done so far and started again with a large hole. I decided that a grid system is not a maze and no one would want to play anything like that. So, I have a question for you guys: Does anyone know of a program that can make a maze as large as this one can? If not can someone write one? Thanks.

I am building an adventure map where you start at the bottom of a very large house and you have to work your way out of it.

You have set a new standard for mega, this could be considered a gargantuan x 1000000000 sized project. Save yourself the work use MCEdit. I will even give you the link.
