Hello,

this is a recreation of the Burning Man base from the Burning Man festival of 2022. The Burning Man festival is an annual music and art festival held in the desert of Nevada. At the end of the festival, a large wooden effigy is burnt, that is where the festival got its name from. Each year, the base which the "Burning Man" stands upon is unique and designed around a theme. 2022's theme was "Waking Dreams".

When I read the prompt list for the Planting Season jam, "Bonfire" and "Giant straw-man" right below painted a picture of a giant burning man in my head which obviously immediately reminded me of the Burning Man effigy.
I really like the concept of the Burning Man festival and already built some art cars from it (El Pulpo Mecanico and The Maria Del Camino), so building the Burning Man itself at some point seemed natural.

I decided to build the 2022 base, since I felt like it had a good size to be put onto a Minecraft server and also seemed practical for players to run around on.
I also liked the look of it and found cool that it had an art gallery under the main stage.

Since this build is designed for a live event and since a static Burning Man would be kind of boring, I thought it would be cool to have the Burning Man actually burn down. So, I animated the Man catching fire, the fire spreading over the Man and finally making him vanish with command blocks.

There are three command blocks labeled "start", "pause" and "reset" that act as "remote controls" for the animation. You can move them anywhere, you just have to make sure that they each place a redstone block on top of their correspondingly colored concrete block inside the glass box. So the "start" command block has to place a redstone block on top of the lime concrete block inside the glass box, the "pause" command block has to place a redstone block on top of the red concrete block inside the glass box and the "reset" command block has to place a redstone block on top of the yellow concrete block inside the glass box.

Inside the glass box there are many unused slots for frames, so you could add even more frames to the animation if you wanted.

After activating the "start" command block, the Man will catch on fire until he is fully on fire, be fully on fire for about 30 seconds and then slowly burn down and vanish. You can adjust the delay between frames with the repeaters inside the glass box.

Activating the "pause" command block will pause the animation, to resume playing it activate the "start" command block again. The "pause" command block "freezes" the present redstone signal in between frames, so if you pause the animation before starting it there is no redstone signal present, so you have to activate the "start" command block twice, first to get the machine out of its paused state and a second time to actually kick off the animation and to have a redstone signal that can be "frozen".
If you are unsure whether the machine is in a paused state or not you can check the lime green concrete block inside the glass box, it will turn into a dark green concrete block if the machine is paused.

Activating the "reset" command block will halt the animation, let the remaining redstone signal fade out and then rebuild the Man to its initial state. It can be activated at any time and resets everything to its initial state.

Since the glass box is mostly filled with air and is underground, I highly recommend pasting the schematic with air (so no -a after //paste, actually do
//paste -e since it contains entities).

Also, to prevent the Man from burning down prematurely due to Minecraft's default fire spread it is advisable to set the gamerule doFireTick to false.

For the screenshots I used Complementary Shaders this time instead of Sildur's Shaders because with Sildur's the fire did not look as good.

Here is the first reference from the image gallery because in the gallery it was a little small.

Update #1 : by Captain_JEK 05/27/2025 2:32:07 pmMay 27, 2025 @ 6:32 pm UTC

Added a pause function, you can now pause the animation by activating the "pause" command block and resume playing it by activating the "start" command block again.
