Far away, over the endless seas, lies the Clockwork Isle. Centuries ago, this island was a bastion of hope - a trading haven; nestled between pirate fleets and the cruel sea.

The Doge of the island and his descendants grew rich on the spoils of trade, creating endless towers which pierced the blue skies above. However, the years have not been kind to the Clockwork Isle. Rust & Ruin, the two harbingers of time and lady death, permeate the land and infuse the once strong iron towers with decay and death.

The once mighty isle is a shadow of its former self - looters have cruelly stolen most of the riches which once filled the castle and many of the floors and rooms lay empty. Begrudgingly, hardy survivors eke out a living on the edges of the island as fishermen - not daring to enter the once hallowed halls.

This is an unfinished project. I grew bored during its construction.

There are a lot of unfinished rooms and exteriors, however, I felt I might as well provide a download for anyone that wanted to explore or possibly finish off the build.

You can get a schematic pretty easily for free.

Simply load up the world in MCedit and save it as a schematic, which you can use for your world.

every day millions of crafters make Notch trees and ruin the chance to make their builds kick ass.

Ask your local organics expert today to prevent Notch trees and convert to costum-trees instead.
Together we can stop this

I love the concept and shape of this build! However, I am not really a fan of the amount of detail in it. I think a bit more detail would be cool and all.

However, it is very nice! Diamonded.

I still prefer Steamshire Island to this one, although it took me a while to figure out why.  I think it comes down to how different people appreciate a Minecraft build.  It helps to look at from what angle and position a build looks its best.  This one looks very good when the viewer is far away from it.  It is not that it looks bad up close, but you can't really see it very well when you are walking around on it.  It has a lot of verticality, but it is basically built on a plane.  Steamshire island was more three-dimensional, so while exploring one part you are also getting long views of other parts.  I like to wander around in builds rather than flying around them in Creative, but without flying it is harder to appreciate a single tall structure.

The build itself is fantastic, though.

They're some very valid points you make there, Khanaris. I completely agree with you - I think it explains why I wasn't 'feeling' the build. One of the main things I try to do is add a bit of character/atmosphere, so that the buildfeels 'alive' or that people actually live there. I just couldn't seem to do that with this build, no matter how hard I tired - and as such, I lost interest in it.

I think the verticality of it was one of the main problems. Still a fun challenge to see how high you can stack towers and working out where to place them/make additions, however, once you've built the towers, you can't add that much to them, in the way of outcrops. There are only so many windows/balustrades/houses you can add on to the build, which was the reason for the bridge - to add in more dimensions and character.

Are you still building at all in MC?

It may be that this build is most effective as part of another build.  At one point I was working on a huge ruined tower, but I found that I really couldn't get any sense of how to move around in it or what should be there.  So I just sort of hung it off on the edge of a larger project where it was interesting to look at.  It is a lot of work for something that is effectively acting like a 3-dimensional part of a skybox, but it is still a spectacular skybox in the end.

The way I see it, there are some things (big wheels being a good example) that only look right when you are far away.  When you are close you can clearly see the blocks and they don't look like wheels.  For them to be effective in a design, you have to find a reason for the player to be somewhere else looking at them from a distance.  Probably the simplest way to do this is to have at least two main focal points in a build that have good views of each other.  The natural inclination of the player is to head towards what they can see to explore it.  Once they get there, even if the large-scale aspects of the design are no longer apparent, they will look back towards the other focal point.  And if they walks towards the other focal point they will appreciate the original structure more.

Height is another good example.  If you pick this clockwork island up and drop it into a landscape with other islands or mountains, I think it will actually feel a lot taller.  Partially because you can be walking around below looking up at it, but also because there will be things to see from the high places.  Surrounded by water as it is, I found it easy to lose my sense of how high up I actually was.  Minecraft's limited render distance also makes it difficult, though.  I thought the village around the base of the right tower was one of the best aspects of the design, because comparing the normal-sized buildings to the rest of it gave me an immediate sense of the scale.

I started playing around with Minecraft again a few months ago, but I still don't have a whole lot of time for it.  :(  I spent some time trying to update a lot of the designs I built years ago.  But I have not kicked off any new large scale work in a while.
So cool, needs more pictures though :3

Very, very creative! The little medieval houses could may be a bit more detailed? But I am not sure wether there is the space for that? And I would make the chimneys some blocks shorter.
Anyway again, that is interesting, not repeditive build. Great job!

Thanks LouizZ, I agree - the houses could use a lot more detailing/differentiation. To be completely honest, I grew bored of making them - so a lot of houses are actually copied, rotated and pasted - which makes quite a few of them look bland and unimaginative.
