My good friend Xenocides and I were messing around with some redstone the other day when I came up with this neat little 3x3 Wall BUD (Block Update Detector) switch. It works on the basis of diagonal redstone powering the piston.
This could be used as an indication that your furnaces have finished cooking, redstone ores have been activated, etc...

I used the principle of diagonal redstone. This is when you power a piston diagonally from a block and trick it into thinking that its being properly powered, when it in fact isn't.
The reset mechanism then kicks in after we update the piston where the block that is diagonally placed to the piston is then unpowered, resetting the piston.

A simple compact and neat 3x3 design using minimal materials that can easily fit into your base. I believe Avalanche_Ali has made an even more compact design.
