De Vryplaets is a traditional Frisian cargoship called a "Skûtsje" ( used in shallow waters and rivers. Skûtsjes are at most 20m long and about 3.5 to 4m wide so it would fit under bridges and in locks. These ships eventually stopped being used as cargoships as enginepowered ships took over and were converted into houseboats. From the '50's and onward these ships were restored into their original condition and used for racing.

The ship is built in a 5ish:1 scale.
