Dicker Max

The Dicker Max (German for “Fat Max”) was a German prototype self-propelled gun and tank destroyer developed during World War II. Its official designation was 10.5 cm K gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette, and it was built on a modified Panzer IV chassis. Only two prototypes were ever produced.

    Role: Originally designed as a bunker buster to attack fortified positions such as the Maginot Line, but later evaluated as a tank destroyer.

    Main armament: A powerful 105 mm K 18 L/52 gun, capable of destroying bunkers and heavily armored tanks at long range.

    Armor: Up to about 50 mm on the front, with much thinner side and rear protection.

    Crew compartment: Open-topped fighting compartment, giving good visibility but making the crew vulnerable to artillery fragments, aircraft attacks, and small-arms fire from above.

Service History

The two prototypes were sent to the Eastern Front for combat trials. One was destroyed in an accidental fire, while the other fought against Soviet forces and proved effective against enemy tanks thanks to its powerful gun. However, its limited mobility, small production run, and vulnerability prevented it from entering mass production.

Summary

The Dicker Max was essentially a glass cannon: it carried one of the most powerful anti-tank guns available to Germany at the time, but its thin armor and open fighting compartment made it vulnerable in combat. It remains a fascinating example of Germany's experimental tank-destroyer designs.
