Lonely Mountain, or Erebor, was a mountain in the north-east of Rhovanion. It was the source of the river Running, and a major Dwarven stronghold at the end of the Third Age and well into the Fourth.

The Lonely Mountain was possibly 3,500 feet tall, as it was snowcapped at spring. Geologically, it was rich in metals and jewels.

The mountain was star-shaped with six ridges radiating as spurs from the peak.

The south-western spur contained Ravenhill housing a Dwarven guard-post. Between the two western spurs was a narrow vale which was the exit of the Back Door, behind an overhanging cliff. Rough steps ascended to the top of the southern ridge along a narrow ledge turning east behind a boulder into a steep bay.

Inside, the mountain was dug with passages and tunnels leading to cellars and halls and mansions such as the great chamber of Thrór near the Front Gate. A secret tunnel led to the "bottommost cellar"

The main entrance into the mountain was the Gate of Erebor on the south side, opening onto a valley between two great spurs of the mountain. At the end of the southwestern spur was Ravenhill, where there was a lookout post. The River Running sprang from beneath the mountain and issued from the Front Gate, forming a waterfall that fell into the valley below.

Inside the gate was a broad paved road that went alongside the river in a wide curve leading into the mountain. Not very far from the entrance was the Great Chamber of Thrór where feasts and councils were held.

In the Lower Halls, there was a vast chamber called the Great Hall of Thráin at the root of the mountain. From there a secret passageway led to a hidden door in the western side of the mountain. The Back Door was invisible from the outside except on Durin's Day, when the light of the setting sun would reveal the keyhole.

This is our version of Erebor. Based mainly on the movie version of The Hobbit, but being the fan of Tolkien I am, I feel the need to implement lore features. This project was started in December 2012 and is still being worked on today. Do not ask for a download, it will be available once the project is done. The texture pack is custom for this build.

38 Update Logs

Bad news. : 02/10/2016 8:54:10 pmFeb 10th, 2016

Some time in August I received this email from my server provider.

Everything -- save for a few schematics (Ravenhill, Great Hall, treasury, small city areas and other minor things such as pillars) -- was sadly lost. The only save I have is from January 2015, which is prior to the major updates and revamps I had made to every part of Erebor.

I am unsure on how I will proceed from here. I still have those schematics, but I do not know what I will do with them. Maybe I will try to rebuild... Maybe this is it. We'll see have to see.

It's so a pity. I wait for a long time for this download. Where is a new update? Did you stop working on this map? There are so many questions in my mind. Can you answer me this questions? Please.
Check the update logs' section, Sidhion unffortunatelly lost the entire project due to a server crash...
Please can you release the map you drew of erebor I am making my own and it would help to see how another interpreted it!

Download?
I'm so sorry Blobfish2002, but it looks like Sidhion lost the whole project. There will be no downloads. We can only hope that Sidhion decides to rebuild it in it's whole glory. But until then, we can only hope...
Sorry to sound like a dick but this is why you always make a download/backup every once in a while...

Backups were made, each over 2GBs, and I still have them, along with 50+ schematics. But a lot of progress was made between the last backup and the data loss. Far too much to be easily rebuilt.

Could you release the schematics I have always wanted to see the layout of the inside of Erebor because Peter Jackson never released a map of the inside.
Do you by any chance have some more photos?

Dear Sidhion,

It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Sidhion. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Sidhion, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
There is some good in this world, Mr. Sidhion.
And it is worth fighting for.

Hopefully you're entitled to some form of compensation from your server provider!

You should make the Golden Staute I think was of Durin that they melt on to smaug and either make it a seperate download or put it in to another version of Erebor. Also Sphincter found out a way to make the Lonely Mountain full size http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/erebor-mountain/ .
The Golden Statue of Erebor resembled King Thror, not Durin.

The Carnen is not part of this map as it is too far east.
Huge project ! It will be amazing. That is really a great and beautiful work. And the valley of Dale is awesome.
Are you going to make the front entrance look like the damaged version seen of Battle of Five Armies

Hi! (I apologize in advance for my long comment)
I am not into Minecraft forums and blogs, but I have played Minecraft since 2011, and when I came across this Erebor project I got really excited.
I am a fan of the Middle Earth-franchise myself, though I haven`t read any of the books (sorry :P, but I do have the entire film collection in blu-ray) and your knowledge of Tolkien`s works is clearly beyond mine . The reason I even registered here at planetminecraft was solely to get to put up this comment and ask you a question. I have watched the first Hobbit film over and over again and I began wondering after looking through your pictures above a few times.
During Bilbo`s narration in the first movie where we get to see Erebor during it`s golden days, there is a city center-like place. I think it is one of the most spectacular views in the Hobbit-trilogy. It is shown in the first movie during Bilbo`s narration from the point he says: "Oh Frodo, Erebor..." as shown in this youtube video between 1:56 and 2:07: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5k3X9huWVg
Have you included this area? I don`t excpect you to do so now if it is not a part of your plan, of course. But personally I hope you have included it and I would love to see it.
So, to summarize: I do respect you as a gamer and your work is nothing short of spectacular! ... but have you done the area I have adressed a couple of times by now? :)

Oh, of course! How could I not? It's definitely the greatest view in the entire trilogy (except maybe for the treasury, great atmosphere in that scene). It was one of the very first areas of Erebor I built, and I even rebuilt it because I thought it could be better.

Every area of Erebor you see in the movie will be included in this map, even the insignificant places. And that's what sets this project aside from the others - the great extent I go to to ensure Erebor is as accurate as it can be.

Thanks for your comment! I'll be sure to include our beloved area in the next update. If you've got any more questions, feel free to ask.
Hows it coming along?

I've been working on this area. It's very big and is taking some time to complete. It'll look very good when it is, however.
