The Grumman F4F Wildcat was an American naval fighter aircraft.  It saw service with the British, Canadian and US Navies from early on to the end of the second world war.  It was a good all round fighter especially in the early years.  In the Pacific it was the only effective US navy fighter availble to counter the Japanese.  Although the main Japanese fighter, the Zero, was generally superior to the Wildcat, good use of tactics, better armament and the Wildcats armoured fuselage meant it could engage the japanese on relativly equal grounds.
