The end result of my project to re-create my most favourite battleship of all time, the British Royal Navy Battleship, HMS Warspite.
This model is built to 1:1 scale from blueprints and over 100 sourced pictures and models from the internet and depicts Warspite after her second wartime refit, late 1943.
HMS Warspite was a Queen Elizabeth class battleship comissioned at the start of the first world war, her 8 powerful 15 inch guns gave her a legendary firepower which redered her more than a slight threat to any vessel unfortunate enough to confront her.
In the run up to the second world war, Warspite recieved a massive overhaul and upgrade which drastically altered her appearance and effectively gave the Navy a brand new battleship.
Her first engagement with the german navy was at the battle of narvik where her fairey swordfish floatplane became the first aircraft to sink a U-Boat in the war. In addition Warpsite also sank the german destroyer Z13 Erich Koellner and damaged 2 others, whilst she escaped miraculously unscathed.
For the rest of the war Warspite saw action in the Medditerranean, Indian ocean and north west Europe, doing battle with the Axis navies and air forces, living up to her motto, enduring shellfire, bombing, ramming, mines and a missile. Her crew giving her the nickname 'The grand old lady'. Her long combat service in the two great wars had earnt her the most battle honours and made Warspite the most awarded ship in the Royal Navy, of all time.
After a 30 year long career, it was time for her to withdraw from service, although there were proposals to keep her as a museum ship, the harsh post-war economic climate meant her fate was the scrap yard. In 1946 whilst being towed around the coast of Britain to the scrappers, she broke free of her tow lines and ran aground in Cornwall, several attempts were made to re-float her, but eventually she was cut up on site and by 1955, there was nothing left.
Built and designed by myself, hope you enjoy and please check out my youtube channel here for more awesome world war two creations and tutorials! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoqShLf9darvzmHuk6Y3d0A
