Initially I would build a rough skeleton (usually wood) of the ship. I would work on the skeleton until I get the shape and size I wanted. I would later make the outer haul with stone, cover the stone in iron and finally add the details. The same went for the insides; if you peel apart the UN-X01, you can see my old method.
Today, I use a program called AutoCAD to make the rough skeletons; it’s a lot quicker but it’s a little tricky to use in the beginning. If you want to start building futuristic warships, you need to make a style of your own. I’m tend to do a baroque type architecture. Just practice making rough skeletons and later on modeling it to your liking.
With that method I greatly improved my ship designs. If you take a look at my first ship (UN-X01) and my latest, you can see how useful rough skeletons are.
If you need help on anything, or some advice, feel free to ask!
Maybe in the future we could work on a collaboration; I’m already doing one with a fellow minecrafter. It’s a giant battle field taking place on a number of islands; I’ll be posting the concept later today, so feel free to have a look!
