I think its the idea of things that aren't supposed to be alive coming to life. Not things like chairs or sticks, but things that we've made to mimic life. Imagine seeing mannequins start walking around after hours at the mall. It'd creep you out because they aren't supposed to do that, and you don't know their intent, or reasoning as to why that happened.



FNaF takes that, and the feeling of nostalgia and mixes the two together, turning beloved Chuck E Cheese style animatronics and twists them on its head, and instead makes you even more scared of them than you might have been as a kid, and gives you a real reason to be afraid of them.



Sure, the jumpscares are the backbone of why its scary, but also the concept of FNaF in general is kinda terrifying.
