En 1882, la Compagnie Générale Transatlantique achète 11 transatlantiques « provinces ». Ces navires portaient des noms de régions françaises. Le premier à avoir été mis en service est le paquebot La Normandie en 1883 pour la ligne Le Havre-New York. Le dernier à avoir été construit était La Provence en 1906. C’était le premier navire à porter le nom de cette région devenue connue dans le monde grâce au port transatlantique du Havre, au débarquement de juin 1944 et au paquebot France de 1960. Evidemment, La Normandie de 1883 est différent du célèbre Normandie de 1935, chef d’œuvre de l’art déco sur le thème de cette magnifique région du nord de la France. La Normandie était le premier de sa catégorie à disposer de l’électricité. Pour ceux qui étaient assez courageux de traverser l’Atlantique nord, ils pouvaient manger de la viande fraiche même s’il n’y avait pas de frigos puisque les animaux étaient gardés vivants puis abattus à bord. En 1894, le paquebot subit une première restauration.

En 1895, La Normandie est rachetée par les Lignes Maritimes Françaises devenues French Luxury Cruise (FLC) en 1990. L’intérieur du paquebot est entièrement repensé donnant à la première classe une bibliothèque, une nouvelle salle à manger, un grand escalier et un fumoir luxueux décoré de pierres d’Ambre Russe. Le paquebot effectue la ligne Le Havre-New York en moins de 15 jours. Le navire d’environ 100 mètres de long ravis la bourgeoisie et l’aristocratie française jusqu’en 1914 où le bateau est affecté au transport de troupes jusqu’en 1917. En février 1917, le bateau est torpillé par un sous-marin allemand au large du Havre noyant 200 personnes. Des pièces d’orfèvreries, des décors et de l’ameublement ont pu être sortis de l’eau et sont aujourd’hui restaurés et conservés au musée des Lignes Maritimes Françaises.

In 1882, the CGT (Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, French Line) lauchs the « provinces » liners. The company bought 11 ships named of the regions of France. The first one is La Normandie which started her service in 1883 from Le Havre to New York. The last one to be built was La Provence in 1906. It was the first ship to wear the name of this region which became famous for its port of Le Havre and then the D-Day in 1944 (and The 1960 France of course). Obviously, La Normandie can’t be compared with the 1935’s Normandie, which was a masterpiece wearing the beauty of that gorgeous region of north France. La Normandie was the first of her category to get electricity. For those who were courageous enough to cross the Atlantic sea, fresh meat could be eatten even if there wasn’t any fridge as animals were kept alive and slaughtered aboard.

In 1895, La Normandie was bought by the French Maritime Lines, which became French Luxury Cruise (FLC) in 1990. The interior of the liner is completely redesigned giving the first class a library, a new dining room, a grand staircase and a luxurious smoking room decorated with russian amber stones. The approximately 100-metre-long liner delighted the French bourgeoisie and aristocracy until 1914, when the ship was used as a troop transport until 1917. In February 1917, the ship is torpedoed by a German submarine off the coast of Le Havre drowning 200 people. Goldsmith's pieces, decorations and furnishings were pulled out of the water and are today restored and preserved in the Museum of French Maritime Lines.
